SWIM PRACTICE:
I can't get my child to practice in the morning, is there an evening option?
- Unfortunately not at this time. Our pool is open to the members of the pool beginning at noon daily. We are unable to add lane lines during normal business hours
Does my child have to attend every practice?
- While it's highly encouraged to attend all practices, we understand that's not always possible. Please let your coach or the Swim Reps know if your child will miss practice. Practices are unable to made up.
What should be child wear to practice?
- Special swimwear is not required for practice. Typically girls will wear a one piece and boys can choose to wear swim trunks or jammers. Each swimmer should plan to wear goggles for practice. A swim cap is optional for practice.
My child doesn't like early mornings, can they practice with a later group?
- Unfortunately our times are carved out to give our higher level swimmers a chance to swim with others close to their ability. However, if a child/swimmer is identified as a little more advanced than their age group, a coach may invite them to practice with an older group, however they will still compete with their own age group.
Will my child be given one on one instruction?
- Our age groups are taught together. They will be broken down into a few kids per lane typically of close or equal ability. If you are interested in private lessons, please reach out to your coach.
SWIM MEETS
How do I find out what my child is swimming at the meet?
- Our coaches will watch the swimmers throughout the week and make their lineups based on a variety of things. We are limited to a certain number of swimmers and events each meet so your swimmer may not swim all events all of the time. Each swimmer is allowed to swim UP TO 3 individual events and 2 relays each meet depending on swim team size. To allow each swimmer to get a chance to swim multiple events, sometimes they may not be able to be entered in the max number of events.
- Wednesday evening, parents will be emailed a PRELIMINARY list of events. Parents will be responsible to make sure their child is entered into at least one event if they plan to be there, or make sure their swimmer is NOT entered into an event if they will be absent.
- All changes must be made by end of practice Thursday morning. NO NEW ADDS can be made.
I forgot to sign up for the meet, can I just show up and swim?
- No- lineups have very specific requirements per our league rules. Swimmers are unable to be added last minute in any situation.
How does my child know when it is their time to swim?
- Our younger age groups 6 & under, 8& under, 10 & under, and each gender, have a group parent. It is very important that you remind your child to stay near their group, The meets run very quickly with a lot happening all at once. Group parents will be responsible for getting those swimmers to the Clerk of Course to swim on time. It is very hard on our group parents to chase down swimmers.
My child missed their event, what happens now? Can they swim later?
- No, your child will be scratched from that event and unable to make it up. That's why it is very important to stay close to the groups and aware of the timeline of the meet.
My child is swimming, but I have other plans. Can I just drop them off?
- It takes a plethora of volunteers throughout the meet to keep it running. Without volunteers it doesn't happen. Each swimmer is expected to have one volunteer for at least half of every meet. There are many jobs that can be accomplished for even the newest of swim parents. Check out our SWIM MEET JOBS page.
What is my child supposed to eat?
- Swimmers are athletes. They burn a ton of calories quickly. Each swim meet will have a concession stand but coolers and packed food are also allowed. We encourage you to plan to feed your swimmer at an appropriate time so they won't feel sick or weighed down by a heavy meal. This might look like a heavy snack after warm ups and plan a smaller meal or several small meals during their breaks. There is not a specific break in the meet where it stops so timing is important.
My child's bedtime is 8pm, can we leave when we get tired?
- That depends on the events that your child is registered. All 6 & unders are typically finished at a reasonable hour. All other age groups have events all the way until the end. If you have concerns about timing of events and what your child is entered in, please let your coach know ASAP.
What is Champs?
- Champs is the culmination of the entire season and is two day event. The first day is broken into two sessions. Morning session is our older swimmers - ages 11 and up. There is a break in the middle, then the younger ages are in the afternoon/early evening. Each session is run like a regular meet but includes multiple heats of each event with swimmers from all of the clubs. If your swimmer qualifies for the FINALS, they will return the following evening for a regular swim meet. Only the top 12 swimmers (16 at Indian Hill) will qualify to compete.
DIVE PRACTICE
My child has never dove before, can they join the team?
- YES! Dive team is open to divers of all ages. Divers compete a variety of dives from different categories each meet. That even includes pencil jumps! But only in a regular meet.
My child has never done a flip before, do they have to in order to compete?
- Not exactly. Your child will be taught flips throughout practice during the season. They are able to compete a forward and backward straight jump during regular season but will not be able to compete those dives during Champs.
DIVE MEETS
What happens if my child forgets what dive they are supposed to do?
- Each dive is announced before the diver completes their dive.
How many dives must by child do during a meet?
- Each age group consists of a different number of dives that represent different categories. In the beginning of the season, front jumps and back jumps (feet first) are acceptable. Throughout the season our coaches will work with the divers to get the ready for Champs.
What does a dive meet look like?
- Similar to swim, home dive meets will start with the home team warm ups. Each diver/team will warm up their dives for about 30 minutes. The visiting team will follow. The dive meet starts with 8&U girls, then boys concluding with the 15&Up. Each diver will compete one dive at a time for immediate scores and will follow an order for each round. Divers are free to leave after their event as awards are given to each Club at the end of the meet to be picked up beginning the next day. The final places are announced after the entire meet is complete.
What is Champs?
- Dive Champs is an all day affair beginning with 15 & Up usually around 8am. In order to compete, you must have competed in two dive meets during the regular season. Each age group has their own set of dives and number of rounds. The top 12 divers after a specific number of rounds will move on to the final rounds of dives. Front jumps and back jumps are not permitted during any round of Champs. Dives competed must represent certain categories and can include flips/twists.
Awards for Top 12 are awarded at the end of each Group. The timeline can shift throughout the day and will be communicated day of via texts/GroupMe messages. A general timelines will be given up to one week prior to Champs.
